Musical Athlete Fitness Program

Singer-Specific Fitness Training for Better Breathing, Greater Stamina, and Stronger Vocal Support. An eight-week program designed to help vocalists maintain breathing quality, physical support, and movement efficiency as fatigue accumulates.

8-week program • Immediate access • Follow at home or in the gym

Your Voice May Not Be the First Thing That Fatigues

The goal of the Musical Athlete program is to increase the body's postural endurance and preserve breathing mechanics under fatigue thereby creating a dramatic increase in physical stamina and capacity of the body to support the voice. As singers become fatigued, breathing mechanics often change before they consciously notice it. Rib-cage expansion decreases, the breathing pattern shifts, and the neck, jaw, shoulders, and lower back begin to compensate. These physical changes can reduce breathing length, vocal stamina, consistency, range, and power—even when the voice itself is not the original problem.

This Is Not Just a Fitness Program

Most fitness programs create fatigue and simply asks you to push through it.The Musical Athlete Fitness Program builds endurance specifically by challenging breathing mechanics under fatigue while teaching you to recognize when fatigue changes your breathing pattern, restore your breathing mechanics, and continue training without completely losing the physical support behind your voice. We call this process reorganization. Our training process is simple:
1. Utilize a series of exercises which increase breathing capacity
2. Apply a tissue- or work-capacity stressor which challenges these exercises
3. Recheck your breathing at various points during the workout
4. Use a breathing drill when needed to restore breathing capacity
5. Build endurance to resist fatigue

The goal is not to avoid fatigue. The goal is to maintain and restore support as fatigue accumulates.

What is re-organization?

Reorganization is the process of restoring breathing length, breathing mechanics, and physical contacts after fatigue begins to change them.During the program, you will use two simple breathing checks:Lateral breathing test
Checks whether you can still expand the rib cage effectively from side to side.
Chest-versus-belly breathing test
Checks whether fatigue has changed where and how you are breathing.
After each circuit, you will recheck your breathing. If your breathing pattern, exhalation length, or physical contacts have deteriorated, you will perform a simple breathing drill before moving on.This is especially useful for vocalists because the same process can be used during rehearsals and performances:check your breathing → perform a breathing drill → restore support → continue

Instead of waiting until your voice feels exhausted, you learn to identify changes in support earlier and respond before fatigue becomes overwhelming.

What This Program Is Designed to Improve

  • Longer, more comfortable exhalation- Maintain unforced breathing length as fatigue accumulates.

  • Greater vocal stamina- Preserve breathing mechanics across longer rehearsals, practice sessions, and performances.

  • Improved physical support-Maintain the foot, hand, elbow, rib-cage, and trunk contacts that help organize breathing.

  • Reduced compensatory tension- Decrease unnecessary neck, jaw, shoulder, chest, and lower-back involvement.

  • Better fatigue resistance- Lose less breathing quality between circuits and recover more quickly when it does deteriorate.

  • Greater athletic capacity- Build tissue capacity, work capacity, coordination, and confidence without following a generic HIIT program.

How the Eight-Week Program Works

Phase 1 — Foundation (2 weeks)
Learn the breathing checks, establish the reorganization process, and build basic tissue capacity using slow, controlled movement.

Phase 2 — Capacity (2 weeks)
Increase muscular endurance and work capacity while continuing to maintain breathing mechanics and physical contacts.

Phase 3 — Performance (4 weeks)
Challenge support with greater speed, velocity, work capacity, and accumulated fatigue.

The breathing tests and reorganization tools remain familiar while the demands surrounding them progressively increase.

Train 3-5 days per week

3 days per week
Alternate Workout A and Workout B across the week.
4 days per week
Complete Workout A and Workout B twice each week.
5 days per week
Complete two rounds of Workout A and Workout B, plus one additional workout of your choice.
Rest days are built into the schedule to support recovery and maintain training quality.

This program is for you if you want to

  • Want a structured fitness plan built specifically around the demands of singing.

  • Feel physically limited during long rehearsals, performances, or periods of heavy vocal use.

  • Notice that their breathing, posture, or movement changes as they become fatigued.

  • Want to improve fitness without following a generic bodybuilding or HIIT program.

  • Prefer a clear, progressive system rather than random exercises.

  • Want to better understand their own physical limitations and how to respond when fatigue appears.

  • Are willing to train consistently for eight weeks and track changes in breathing and performance.

You do not need to be highly trained or experienced in the gym. You do need to be willing to move, pay attention to your breathing, and follow the program consistently.

About Coach Chris Kelly

The Musical Athlete Fitness Program was created by Coach Chris Kelly, a biomechanics and movement specialist who works with singers, voice teachers, and performers. His work focuses on the physical demands of singing—breathing mechanics, fatigue resistance, movement quality, physical support, and the ability to reorganize when fatigue begins to change the body. This program brings those ideas into a clear eight-week system that vocalists can follow independently at home or in the gym.
